The operational assessment portion will be based on the Figures below, taken from Deming's book, Out Of the Crisis, page 4. He said, "These disagrams were on the wall in Japan." The idea is to think of the whole operation as a system rather than a series of steps. All systems consist of their steps and the interactions among them. It is usually quite complex and efforts to optimize the system by optimizing each of its parts are doomed.
